London Hip Meeting 2009

07/09/2017

London 30 April 2009

Chairman: Fares Haddad

My presentations:

  • ODEP – Is there an effect on what we choose?
  • Impaction Grafting: It works outside Exeter

This is an intense one day meeting based on answering a question to the given title of the presentation driven by Fares Haddad.

The London Hip Meeting is supported by the numerous companies from the orthopaedic industry to accommodate such a prestigious meeting.

The faculty is elected from an international and UK base. The overseas guests brought their unique perspective to the meeting.

The sessions included:

  • Pre Arthroplasty Surgery
  • Innovations in Total Hip Replacement
  • Innovations in Hip Resurfacing and Bearings
  • A Bearing Surface Update
  • The Thrombo Embolic Debate
  • Modern Outcomes including Registries
  • Modern Outcomes including Economics
  • Revision THR

A session was held to ask the expert panel their views on different topics – Challenge the Experts.

The panel consisted of Clive Duncan, Micheal Fraensen, Graeme Gie, Peter Howard, John Masonis, Martyn Porter, Phil Mitchell, Evert Smith and Ian Stockley.

I presented on the work performed by the Orthopaedic Data Evaluation Panel (ODEP). This panel evaluates all hip implants used by orthopaedic surgeons in the UK. This is an extremely topical subject and follows a recent workshop on Total Hip Replacements and Resurfacing Hip Replacements with The National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE). All stakeholders attended the workshop.

I also presented the work carried out in our unit on Impaction Grafting, based on our recent publication in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery in January 2009 (Hassaballa M, Mehendale S, Poniatowski S, Kalantzis G, Smith E et al Journal Bone Joint Surgery 2009; 91: 37-43)

This is an excellent knowledge based meeting that all can aspire to and I personally enjoyed meeting up with my arthroplasty friends from all over the world.

This is an opportune time to congratulate Ian Stockley on his new role as President of the British Hip Society
