The Bristol Hip Course is designed to generate discussion and debate in order to interrogate the topics presented over the two-day event. It is now one of the most valuable hip conferences for hip surgeons in the UK and it attracts an excellent international faculty.

We were pleased to welcome experts in their field from within the UK, Ireland, the United States, Switzerland, Greece and Holland, who provided in depth and insightful presentations on many aspects of the hip. Topics included total hip replacement in children, hip conserving procedures and getting back to sport after hip replacement, through to new technologies and what robotics and 3D printing can bring to hip surgery.

For the first time in the course’s history, there was a live video link. Thanks to Sri, Ashok, Siddharth and James for their help and support in organising this which allowed more than 2,000 delegates to view the conference over the two days.

Our radiographic forum has proved to be so popular and valuable as a learning medium that we programmed two sessions as opposed to one on previous occasions.

One of the high points of this year’s conference was a debate on soft and hard bearing surfaces which was conducted between Derek Bennet from the Mayo Clinic, Ireland and Tim Waters from West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust. Keynote lectures were offered by Derek Bennett, Michael Christie from the USA and Oliver Borens from Switzerland.

My grateful thanks, as ever, go to David Penford, Gaynor Salisbury and Mark Penford of Clockwork Marketing and Events; and also, to Chris and Guy on sound and vision.

Feedback received from course delegates indicated that we fulfilled our objective – to exchange and challenge knowledge in order to advance outcomes in our specialty.

The conference was another great success! Thank you to everyone who presented, helped organise or attended, for being with us this year.
