Egyptian Pelvis and Hip Society

Cairo - May 2016

It was my pleasure to accept an invitation to participate in the 2nd International Conference of the Egyptian Pelvis and Hip Society where I was reacquainted with a mentor from my time as a Registrar, Maher Halawa, Honorary President of the EPHS.

I took the red eye flight from London to arrive in Cairo at 4.20 a.m. in order to be on the podium for a 10 a.m. presentation entitled Evidence Based Registry Data on Cemented, Cementless, Hybrid THA, followed by a further presentation on Bearing Choices. On day two of the conference, I presented a talk on the Direct Superior Approach to the hip. There was a hands-on sawbones workshop on how to perform cemented and cementless THA, as well as proper cementing technique and tips and tricks. I took part as an expert panellist in the session ‘Dos and Don’ts in THA’.

There was a sparkling array of international speakers, namely Luigi Zagra with whom I am associated through the European Hip Society, Vidish Raut from Wrightington, Frederik Farison from Saint Étienne, Bahir Elias of Chez University Teaching Hospital Jean Minjoz and John Charity of the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, to compliment an outstanding programme of national speakers.

This was a hugely successful conference that embodied the collegiate spirit in the fraternity of orthopaedics in Egypt. Very impressive.
