Combined Meeting of 6th International Geriatric Orthopaedic Society, Fragility Fracture Network (India) and Current Concepts in Arthroplasty – 2018

6-9 September 2018

Jawaharlal Auditorium, AIIMS, Delhi

The conference organiser was Professor Raj Malhotra, head of the Orthopaedic Department at AIIMS and he put together a spectacularly interactive, entertaining and informative programme which was attended by hundreds of doctors from all medical disciplines. I was delighted to meet Professor John Ebenezar, GOSICON President and Dr Armanath, GOSICON Secretary.

MinisterOfAffairs

The audience received a speech given by Rainath Singh, the Minister of Home Affairs endorsing the GOSICON ideals and promising support from the government for much needed research and development in orthopaedics, aimed at tackling the joint replacement needs of an ever-increasing elderly demographic.

I gave three presentations at the GOSICON Conference. One was on the Exceed Acetabular Bearing System, the second was entitled Approaches to the Hip – What’s New? and finally, New Trends in Acetabular Revision.

Live surgery

I performed live surgery at AIIMS with a team of able assistant surgeons including Dr Srinath and Orthopaedic Resident Dr Vikrant. I visited the 35-year old female patient with developmental dysplasia of the hip on the ward, where she was consented for a total hip replacement by me. TeamShe had avascular necrosis of the femoral head and associated leg length discrepancy. I used a minimal approach operation which was a major success, and offers an excellent outcome following surgery. The surgery was observed by more than 500 delegates.

A second meeting was held by Karnataka Orthopaedic Association (KOA) in Bengaluru and here I presented on Approaches to the Hip Joint, again. I also fielded questions regarding my career journey in orthopaedics, which included my scientific research, the design of hip devices and my Arthroplasty for Arthritis Charity work.

EJS award

At the finale of the meeting in Bengaluru, I was Awarded Master of Surgery. This great honour was bestowed on me by Professor Purushotam, President of the KOA alongside Professor JK Reddy. Fantastic!

I reacquainted with one of my former Fellows, Dr Srikanth who put together a superb social programme so that I was able to experience some of the wonders of India while I was there.

My trip to India was hectic and memorable, a massive learning experience where I gained orthopaedic knowledge and I established some long-term friendships with my peers in the colourful and vibrant country of India.
