Cancun, Mexico, 19-21 June 2008

This was an International Hip and Knee Meeting for Latin America. The Symposium was co-chaired by Victor Ilizaliturri and Adolph Lombardi. The meeting provided an up to date review of the world of hip and knee surgery.

I was one of the International Faculty and Co–Chaired a Master Class for Metal on Metal Big Head Technology with Tom Donaldson in the early evening before Registration.

This interactive session was extremely fruitful as all the minute detail about this subject and the surgical technique could be aired. This is not possible in the formal structured Symposium.

Roger Emerson provided the audience with eloquent and detailed overview of subjects relating to both hip and knee arthroplasty. His understanding of uni-compartment knee arthroplasty is borne out of a long experience using this type of prosthesis.

I presented on "Ceramic on Metal: Optimizing the Metal Ion Load and Resurfacing vs. Large Head THA: Indications and Contraindications", which had the delegates discussing the issues about patient selection for Resurfacing Arthroplasty.

The meeting covered revision surgery and the ways in which we are able to deal with bone stock loss with modern implants. I presented on "Jumbo Cup: The Workhorse of the Acetabular Revision (vs the cup cage)".

The Symposium utilized members of the Faculty (including myself) to answer questions from the floor about different controversial subjects.

The session title was "Personal Pearls – Ask the surgeon…." The topics were as follows:

Hip Surgery

My Surgical Approach
Minimal Invasive Surgery – What Are You Doing?
My Ideal Stem
My Ideal Bearing Surface
My Ideal Head Size
Hydroxyapatite or Non-Hydroxyapatite?
Screws or No Screws?
Hip Resurfacing vs. THA
Deep Vein Thrombosis
Antibiotic Prophylaxis

Knee Surgery

My Surgical Approach-Mini Vastus/Sub Vastus and Medial Parapatellar/Lateral Parapatellar
Resurfacing the Patella
Cemented vs.Cementless Tibial Fixation
Posterior Stabilised vs. Anterior Stabilised vs. Posterior Cruciate Retaining
Management of Bone Defects
Pain Control
Continuous Passive Motion
Manipulation
Deep Vein Thrombosis
Antibiotic Prophylaxis

I also chaired the session on Primary THA-Current Trends and Revision THA- The Femur

This kept me busy through out the Symposium.

I charged out of the meeting to catch a flight back to London via Montreal. My luggage was lost in Montreal but was found and returned later. Ah!…the life of modern air travel!
