MAYO Arthroplasty Conference - MAC

07/09/2017

Westerport, Ireland April 2016

My day began with a scenic journey from Shannon Airport to the picturesque town of Westport in Ireland where I was a member of the faculty for the MAYO Arthroplasty Conference (MAC) organised by Derek Bennett.

The MAC is based on short, tight presentations that focus the minds of delegates on the knowledge being imparted. I made a presentation in Session 3 – ‘Licence to kill – the “double O” section’ – and my talk discussed whether there is a role for metal on metal bearings in the future of total hip replacement.

During the conference we visited the rules, circumstances, complications, hazards, economics, technical issues and future of total hip replacement surgery. American Residents and Irish Registrars participated in a case presentation contest and the victors were two local Irish Registrars.

The finalé of the conference was a black tie dinner with a host of entertaining speakers including the Ambassador of The United States, His Excellency, Kevin O’Malley. Honours were bestowed on Peter Sharkey of the Rothman Institute and Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.
